For all interested in experimenting with AI. LM Studio<https://lmstudio.ai/> is a desktop app for running large language models locally on your own computer, instead of calling a cloud AI service. It supports Windows, macOS, and Linux and its official docs describe features such as downloading compatible models, chatting with them in the app, serving them through local APIs and using OpenAI-compatible endpoints.
In practical terms, people use LM Studio to:
* download and run models like Llama, Qwen, Gemma, or DeepSeek locally;
* keep prompts and outputs more private because inference can stay on their machine;
* expose a local model as an API for apps or coding workflows;
* connect MCP servers and other local tooling.
A simple way to think about it: LM Studio is a local AI workstation for LLMs. It is not itself the model; it is the software that helps you download, manage, run, and serve models on your hardware.
One newer feature is LM Link<https://lmstudio.ai/link>, which lets you use models running on your other devices as if they were local, over an end-to-end encrypted connection. LM Studio also offers a headless server-oriented component called llmster for no-GUI deployments. (edited)
