KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent will be responsible for:
- Providing strategic professional leadership and facilitate the
development of responsive plans that align with DLS, Faculty and
institutional priorities;
- Contributing to the strategy formulation, implementation and ensure
operational plans for Faculty library are in place as a member of DLS
management team;
- Facilitating support for all departments/centres/units in the
Faculties with their information needs and services to advance research and
the international profile of the institution;
- Representing the Library in Faculties and engage with Deans, Deputy
Deans, HOD’s, staff and students;
- Management of resources: physical, financial and technologies;
- Manage the development of staff for effectiveness in enriching the
student experience and learning;
- Promoting the Department of Library Services;
- Leading the team and overseeing HR and staff performance management;
- Managing information resources in line with current trends that
support research, teaching and learning needs of the faculty;
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Library qualification (e.g. B.Bibl, Degree plus PG Dip.LIS or B.Inf
(Hons) AND or a relevant Honors;
- Experience in the following:
- A minimum of 6 years’ working experience in an academic library or
research library of which 2 years should be in management;
- Working as an Information Specialist with knowledge of the subject and
work environment of the primary users;
- Research process;
- The use and impact of information technology;
- Understanding of various publishing models.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL
ATTRIBUTES):
- Expert knowledge of the subject and work environment of the primary
users;
- Knowledge of the research process;
- Expert knowledge of relevant information resources;
- The ability to organise information and make it available to the
community;
- Knowledge of marketing of DLS services and products;
- The ability to identify training needs and provide relevant training;
- Ability to benchmark services and products;
- Knowledge of legal requirements with regards to information
distribution and information media;
- Expert knowledge of training and evaluation methods;
- Creativity, innovation and adaptability;
- Client focused;
- Emotional intelligence;
- Financial Management skills;
- Relevant information technology (Software and Hardware);
- Negotiating skills.

- A master’s degree;
- Subject related qualifications;
- A Valid Driver’s Licence.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s
level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes
to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the
applicable monthly premium.
