Science in Africa is high on the agenda during this week. The Science Forum South Africa event is a highlight for us as a country, engaging citizens and visitors from all over the world, demonstrating how science benefits the man on the street. This (benefitting people) is also what we would like to achieve through opening up research conducted with public money.

Following Open Access and the implementation of the first Open Access Institutional Repositories approximately 10 years ago, followed by Open Access (gold) Journals, the next logical step is Open Data - all part of opening up science (Open Science) activities and making science more transparent. As with OA repositories and OA journals, libraries continue to play an important role - also in Open Science.

The SFSA events of today will be streamed life - visit http://www.sfsa.co.za/programme/ . From 13:30 to 15:00, ASSAf will be hosting a panel discussion on Conversations Around Openness in African Research: Open Access, Open Data, Open Science<http://www.sfsa.co.za/session-summaries-and-bios/conversations-around-openness-in-african-research-open-access-open-data-open-science/> with input from high level key stakeholders from Africa, amongst others reflecting on a workshop presented as part of the African Open Science Platform initiative on 7 Dec. 2016. The African Open Science Platform initiative is directed by CODATA, funded by the DST (NRF), and managed by ASSAf.

Hope you will be able to attend, or to join the life stream!

Kind regards
Ina
