Dear Colleagues
The NMMU - on Monday - hosted an excellent Open Access Seminar. Congratulations to Mr Robert Pearce (Library Director) and Ms Nomathongo Bell (Deputy Director: Bibliographic Services Library and Information Services, NMMU) for a job well done, and we are looking forward to great progress in terms of OA at NMMU.
A presentation on OA policies and the current state is available at http://www.slideshare.net/inaviljoensmith/open-access-policy-driving-access-to-research-ina-smith
UNESCO - during a consultative forum at the beginning of the year - invited countries to work with them on national OA policies for selected African countries. ASSAf has indicated that they would like to participate with UNESCO in developing a national SA OA Policy (slides 29-30). A concept proposal has been drafted, and the Committee for Scholarly Publishing in South Africa (CSPiSA) (to which the ASSAf Scholarly Publishing Unit reports), has approved this.
This is a long and extensive process, but will keep you posted.
Kind regards
Ina
