Applications are now open for the sixth intake of the Masters of Information Technology (Stream B) programme at the University of Pretoria, South Africa.  The programme is aimed at enhancing ICT skills for research enablement in African universities. There are two types of intake, namely funded and non-funded. Prospective students can apply for either the funded or the non-funded intake, depending on their country of origin. Academic librarians and LIS faculty in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda are eligible to apply for admission to the funded option of the programme.

Applications close on 31 October 2015.

The funded programme is presented through a grant by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. Please note that this will be the final funded intake.

The program makes use of a blended learning methodology - technology-mediated distance education as well as on-site, face-to-face lectures. Lecturing will take place in Pretoria, South Africa, as well as in the USA at the Universities of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Wisconsin-Milwaukee and in Uganda at Makerere University.

Aim of programme:
- To empower the next generation of library and information professionals within sub-Saharan African countries with knowledge and skills to apply modern information and communication technologies (ICTs).
- To build capacity amongst middle managers involved in managing ICT or working in ICT-intensive environments in academic libraries and faculty members at Library and Information Science schools to support the next generation of academics and researchers in Africa.

What we offer:
The programme will consist of coursework as well as a mini-dissertation based on applied research related to the individual’s own institution, each component carrying 50% of the credits of the programme.
The following are compulsory coursework modules:
- IT Systems in libraries
- Web trends in the library
- Digital repositories
- Knowledge management
- Facilitating information retrieval and information use
- Network technologies
- The knowledge society and international librarianship
- Computing in perspective
- Organisational behaviour and leadership
- Strategic ICT management
- ICT Project Management
- IT Financial Management

For students that qualify for the funded version of the programme, the funding covers books and other academic expenditures, flights, accommodation, and a daily stipend while in Pretoria, the USA and Uganda. All participants are expected to reside in the accommodation provided for the duration of the block periods in South Africa, the USA and Uganda.

Grant exclusions:
- Visa applications, personal expenses (for example medicine, laundry, phone calls, etc.)
- ICT equipment such as laptops, modems, internet access top-ups etc.
- Travel to and from the airport in your home country

Application for the sixth intake of 2016 closes on 31 October 2015. No late applications will be considered.
