Dear Collegaues

LIASA HELIG/WC HELIG presented a highly successful workshop on digital curation together with the Digital Curation Centre, the Univ. of Glasgow, Scotland. The presentations are available at: http://www.dcc.ac.uk/training/digital-curation-101/liasa-rdm-workshop/liasa-research-data-management-workshop Lucia Lötter from the HSRC presented an excellent paper on the SA status in terms of digital curation.

Just a few things clarified/confirmed for me personally:
- Data curation = data management
- Digital preservation is one small aspect of digital curation within the scholarly communication life cycle
- An institutional repository is one way of managing/curating data
- Curating data sets is a complex activity, and ideally a discipline specialist/researcher should be appointed to manage/curate data sets within a specific discipline
- Curate with what you have and can afford
- It is preferred that a separate repository is used for data sets - links can be created from the dissertation/thesis/article to the data set for future reference, e.g. if someone who wants to test the findings reported in an article, wants to verify it before using it
- Data sets can be open or restricted - manage access
- Since data sets is regarded as work in progress, provision should be made for various versions, and the final version can then be curated
- Collaboration is required within an institution - between faculty, library, research office, ethics committees, IP office, IT, etc
- IT will need to provide an infrastructure
- Distinguish between small data and big data - data sets can be extremely huge
- Each discipline has a specific metadata scheme to be used for describing the data sets
- An institution needs to have a policy on data curation. Data sets can be curated at the institution itself, within a dept., in the cloud, or with another data repository somewhere in the world. It depends on the policy of the institution
- When researchers receive funding from the NRF, they are required to indicated how the data sets will be curated
- Faculty librarians can play a role in terms of assisting individual researchers with data management planning. A very useful DCC tool: https://dmponline.dcc.ac.uk<https://dmponline.dcc.ac.uk/> . It would maybe useful for them to also be familiar which data repositories exist in the disciplines they provide support for, and also what funder requirements are in terms of data.

Kind regards
Ina

Dear Colleagues

Once again thank you for participating in the workshop presented yesterday! We trust that this was a valuable learning experience, and that you are now better equipped to take data management further at your institution – on institutional level (in terms of a policy), as well as on individual researcher level (individual research data management planning when conducting research).

Thank you once again Lucia, Sarah and Joy – for your time, preparation for the workshop, willingness to share, and so much more. It is highly appreciated!

The presentations have been made available online (thanks Sarah & Joy for the quick availability!): http://www.dcc.ac.uk/training/digital-curation-101/liasa-rdm-workshop/liasa-research-data-management-workshop You are most welcome to use these when reporting back to management and when making recommendations.

Feedback: A kind request that you please complete the very short online questionnaire. Click here<http://www.dcc.ac.uk/node/10216>. We value your feedback!

We hope that you have travelled back safely, and that you would stay in touch and share your achievements in terms of data management/curation!

With kind regards
Ina (on behalf of LIASA HELIG/WC HELIG/ Joy & Sarah)
