<div>LIASA HELIG/WC HELIG presented a highly successful workshop on digital curation together with the Digital Curation Centre, the Univ. of Glasgow, Scotland. The presentations are available at: <a href="http://www.dcc.ac.uk/training/digital-curation-101/liasa-rdm-workshop/liasa-research-data-management-workshop" target="_blank" style="font-size:10pt">http://www.dcc.ac.uk/training/digital-curation-101/liasa-rdm-workshop/liasa-research-data-management-workshop</a> Lucia
Lötter from the HSRC presented an excellent paper on the SA status in terms of digital curation.</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>Just a few things clarified/confirmed for me personally:</div>
<div>- Data curation = data management</div>
<div>- Digital preservation is one small aspect of digital curation within the scholarly communication life cycle</div>
<div>- An institutional repository is one way of managing/curating data</div>
<div>- Curating data sets is a complex activity, and ideally a discipline specialist/researcher should be appointed to manage/curate data sets within a specific discipline</div>
<div>- Curate with what you have and can afford</div>
<div>- It is preferred that a separate repository is used for data sets - links can be created from the dissertation/thesis/article to the data set for future reference, e.g. if someone who wants to test the findings reported in an article, wants to verify
 it before using it</div>
<div>- Data sets can be open or restricted - manage access</div>
<div>- Since data sets is regarded as work in progress, provision should be made for various versions, and the final version can then be curated</div>
<div>- Collaboration is required within an institution - between faculty, library, research office, ethics committees, IP office, IT, etc</div>
<div>- IT will need to provide an infrastructure</div>
<div>- Distinguish between small data and big data - data sets can be extremely huge</div>
<div>- <span style="font-size:10pt">Each discipline  has a specific metadata scheme to be used for describing the data sets</span></div>
<div>- An institution needs to have a policy on data curation. Data sets can be curated at the institution itself, within a dept., in the cloud, or with another data repository somewhere in the world. It depends on the policy of the institution</div>
<div>- When researchers receive funding from the NRF, they are required to indicated how the data sets will be curated</div>
<div>- Faculty librarians can play a role in terms of assisting individual researchers with data management planning. A very useful DCC tool: <font size="2"><span style="text-align:center"><a href="https://dmponline.dcc.ac.uk/">https://dmponline.dcc.ac.uk</a></span><span style="text-align:center"> .
It would maybe useful for them to also be familiar which data repositories exist in the disciplines they provide support for, and also what funder requirements are in terms of data.</span></font></div>
