Dear Colleague
The Library and Information Service, Stellenbosch University, takes pleasure in inviting you to a workshop specifically aimed at journal editors, journal managers and prospective editors/journal managers or anyone else interested in managing and hosting their journals online, or who wants to gain some background on hosting journals online.
Research has shown that OJS (Open Journal Systems) is fast becoming one of the preferred platforms for publishing research materials. The benefits of publishing using OJS are significant: in the Stellenbosch University environment contributing to "broadening the knowledge base". The fact that there will be a persistent URL guarantees long term preservation even after the title has gone out of circulation. The costs of publishing in OJS are kept to an absolute minimum, and your journal will be hosted at no cost by the library. The implementation of a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) facility will reinforce the trustworthiness of the title. Further, the automatic simultaneous uploading of published articles on OJS and SUNScholar (of Stellenbosch University staff) using the SWORD interface will expand the visibility of the research output. Material publishing in OJS makes provision for harvesting from the full-text: the simultaneous publication in SUNScholar will ensure accurate metadata to enhance retrieval. SUNScholar also has the capacity to track usage of the article if downloaded from SUNScholar.
More about this workshop:
Date: 20 April 2011
Time: 9:00 - 16:30 (lunch break between 12:45 and 13:45, at own cost; tea will be served during the morning and afternoon breaks)

- You will learn how to configure/set up your own journal, submit articles, assign it to the various role players, create issues, and publish an issue online;
- You will also have a clear understanding of the workflow, and how easy it is when compared to traditional ways of managing a journal.
Please register by completing the online form<http://library.sun.ac.za/etd/english/ojs.htm> (RSVP 18 April 2011).
We are looking forward to welcome you at this workshop, and introduce you to this valuable tool for publishing online journals.

Ina Smith
