[IRTalk] Journals requiring thesis disclosure statement?

Dear Hussein,

Thanks for this question. Will have to explore more, but for now, see COPE’s position statement on “Publishing material from theses” which says the thesis should be acknowledged and cited in the publication; several publishers also require disclosure of related outputs (e.g., Frontiers asks authors to disclose related publications and explain added value).

https://publicationethics.org/guidance/cope-position/publishing-material-theses

Hope this helps somewhat.

Kind regards,
Ina

Subject: [IRTalk] Journals requiring thesis disclosure statement?

Caution: This is an external email and may be malicious. Please take care when clicking links or opening attachments.

Dear Colleagues

UCT recently discovered that a local publisher (AOSIS) now wants
explicit disclosure whenever an article is related to a thesis.

see:
https://safpj.co.za/index.php/safpj/pages/view/submission-guidelines#part_2

We have not seen this before. In fact, we have an old rule that
generally disallows disclosing that an article is related to thesis
research.

It seems reasonable to have links in both directions and we cannot
fathom why the old rule exists. Could this be to prevent bias or conflicts?

Does any other institution have such a rule? Has anyone else had to
change rules because of the new AOSIS author declaration?

Regards,
    Hussein Suleman
