RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent will be responsible for:
- Leading and promoting scholarly communications services, dissemination
of the University’s scholarship widely through open, public and emerging
forms of scholarship;
- Ensuring secure digital assets for the future by developing the
preservation service and unique digital scholarship collections;
- Leading, managing, and developing scholarly communication and research
support teams; driving effective performance through identification of
efficient and effective practices and ensuring the design and delivery of
feedback mechanisms to support service improvement;
- Leading collaboration on deployment and strengthening of Library
services directed at the provision of open publishing resources, tools and
technologies;
- Leading advocacy for open science and the right to use information;
- Developing cohesive offerings that support visibility initiatives and
provide research services including citation and altmetrics;
- Participating in the development of institutional policies on
scholarly communication topics such as open access, data management, and
data curation;
- Collaborating with faculty, students, and staff on research projects
across campus to integrate scholarly communication-related services;
- Surveying and assessing the institution's needs for scholarly
communication services and programs;
- Contributing to department strategic projects including areas of
copyright, predatory academic practice, Open Access transformative
agreements that advance research;
- Leading and implementing strategies that assist researchers to achieve
maximum benefits of research data management;
- Repository management including providing analytics on repository
usage and performance.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- A four-year B degree in Library and Information Science or an Honours
degree in Information Science/Library Science (e.g. BIS, BLS, BIBL);
- Five years’ experience of which two years is in a
supervisory/management position in the following:
- Working as a specialist scholarly communication or RDM librarian;
- Experience in an academic or research library setting;
- Experience in a supervisory/management position;
- Experience and skills in copyright, legal and ethical matters related
to open access (OA) and research data management, and familiarity with
rights management issues in digital environments;
- Experience providing guidance and support to researchers and
scholars related
to (a) open access and RDM, (b) Copyright and Intellectual Property l
icensing.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
- Knowledge of copyright holder permissions and creative commons
licenses;
- Knowledge and understanding of data management principles;
- High level of ICT skills including knowledge of metadata schemas;
- Excellent interpersonal skills and comfortable working collaboratively
in a team;
- Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills;
- Project management skills;
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, especially MS Word and MS
Excel;
- Knowledge of research impact metrics documentation and analysis
methods, e.g. bibliometrics, Altmetrics, Webometrics or Google Scholar;
- Knowledge of using publishing platforms (e.g. Open journal systems and
Open Monograph Project;
- Familiarity with metadata standards and formats used in digital
research environments;
- Knowledge of copyright and intellectual property legislation.
ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
- A Master’s degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent
advanced Degree;
- A law qualification or background, including Copyright and
Intellectual Property legislation as a subject;
- Experience providing instruction (training) in an academic environment.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s
level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes
to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the
applicable monthly premium.
