Dear Colleagues
More and more universities are now investing in Open Access scholarly publishing services, incl. journals (e.g. using Open Journal Systems<https://pkp.sfu.ca/ojs/>), books (e.g. using Open Monograph Press<https://pkp.sfu.ca/omp/>), repositories (e.g. using DSpace<http://www.dspace.org/>) and conferences (e.g. using Open Conference Systems<https://pkp.sfu.ca/ocs/>). Open source software can be installed on a local server at an institution/cloud, can be customized, and allows the institution to take ownership, responsibility, at the same time acquiring new skills. For sharing and preserving data, Dataverse<http://dataverse.org/> is for example a possible solution, but there are many more ....
Also visit the ASSAf Open Journal Systems web page<http://academyofsciencesa.wikispaces.com/Open+Journal+Systems+%28OJS%29> to find more information on possible service providers, should you be looking for someone to assist with the installation process of OJS. 11 of the 25 universities in SA have already embarked on offering an OJS service.
We have been invited to present a paper on progress made in Africa in terms of open access journal publishing in the South during the PKP Conference<https://pkp.sfu.ca/2017/04/21/pkp-2017-early-bird-registration-is-now-open/> in Canada later this year, and are looking very much forward. We hope to also share your experiences and more.
Kind regards
Ina
