“Open access wins all of the arguments all of the time” - Dr Ahmed Ogunlaja
[cid:image002.jpg at 01D24958.C315A110]Dr Ahmed Ogunlaja is a medical doctor, public health enthusiast and an open access advocate from Nigeria. He is the founding executive director of Open Access Nigeria, a research and advocacy organisation (specifically among students) working to promote free online access to peer-reviewed scholarly publications and the use of open educational resources. Open Access Nigeria started after Ogunlaja attended the Berlin 11 Satellite Conference in November 2013. For the last three years, Ogunlaja has been mobilising volunteers across Nigerian universities to engage with stakeholders and policymakers in academia and in government, with an aim to enact policies that promote access to research and education as a means of enhancing innovation and accelerating discovery. Open Access Nigeria is active in over 20 campuses across the country. Ogunlaja is also leading a campaign for universities in Nigeria to set up institutional repositories and adopt an open access policy.
Currently Dr Ahmed Ogunlaja is participating in the Mandela Washington Fellowship, the flagship programme of President Obama's Young African Leaders Initiative (#YALI2016). Upon completion of the Mandela Washington Fellowship, Ahmed plans to continue the advocacy work while pursuing his interest in public health advocacy in the area of non-communicable diseases, with a special emphasis on cardiovascular health and drug policy reform.
