Open Access Institutional Repositories and Open Access Journals are two small components, playing important roles in Open Science and the dissemination thereof. Already funder institutions have started to implement policies to make Data Management Planning mandatory (eg Horizon 2020, NRF). Researchers now compile Data Management Plans and submit to funders. In the end the data sets are stored somewhere, e.g. re3data.org<http://www.re3data.org/>, DIRISA Infrastructure (in SA - currently in development), or on other reliable (accredited?) data repositories. DOIs are assigned to data sets to monitor the usage and impact. A new automated workflow expected in the future.

The best example of Open Science from SA probably the way discoveries were done around Homo Naledi, everything open from the start - from the methodology, to the data, to the article<http://elifesciences.org/content/4/e09560v1>. School children could access the blue print of the fossil<http://www.forbes.com/sites/kristinakillgrove/2015/09/19/how-to-print-your-own-3d-replicas-of-homo-naledi-and-other-hominin-fossils/#818099463b25> from the Internet, all while the research was still in progress.

The European Open Science Platform an excellent initiative, also addressing policy.

Kind regards
Ina

The Directorate-General for Research and Innovation intends to establish a Commission Expert Group to provide advice about the development and implementation of open science policy in Europe.

It is therefore calling for expressions of interest with a view to selecting members of the High-Level Advisory Group 'Open Science Policy Platform' (OSPP). The group will consist of 20-30 high-level representatives of the broad constituency of European (open) science stakeholders.

The mandate of the Open Science Policy Platform is to:
1.       advise the Commission on how to further develop and practically implement open science policy, in line with the priority of Commissioner Moedas to radically improve the quality and impact of European science;
2.       function as a dynamic, stakeholder-driven mechanism for bringing up and addressing issues of concern for the European science and research community and its representative organisations, following five broad lines for actions which are presented in the draft European Open Science Agenda<http://ec.europa.eu/research/openscience/pdf/draft_european_open_science_agenda.pdf#view=fit&pagemode=none>  [cid:image001.gif at 01D16E2D.748A0100]  124 KB ;
3.       support policy formulation by helping to identify the issues to be addressed and providing recommendations on the policy actions required;
4.       support policy implementation, contributing to reviewing best practices, drawing policy guidelines and encouraging their active uptake by stakeholders;
5. provide advice and recommendations on any cross-cutting issue affecting Open Science.

DG Research & Innovation is hereby calling for applications with the view of selecting stakeholders as members of the Open Science Policy Platform according to the criteria detailed in the Call for expression of interest.

To ensure that the panel is representative of stakeholders, applicants should clearly demonstrate that they can represent a shared interest by stakeholders or an organisation.

Before sending in an application, please read the Call for expression of interest<http://ec.europa.eu/research/openscience/pdf/call_for_expression_of_interest_-_high_level_advisory_group_ospp.pdf#view=fit&pagemode=none> [cid:image001.gif at 01D16E2D.748A0100] 110 KB carefully.

Please forward any queries on the Open Science Policy Platform by email to: RTD-Open-Science at ec.europa.eu<mailto:RTD-Open-Science at ec.europa.eu>
