[Irtalk] Citing post-prints (Advance Online Publication) available through an OA repository

Dear Colleagues

I had an enquiry this morning, and was thinking it is quite important that these kinds of material be correctly cited - should form part of Information Literacy training. It applies to version control within an IR, and distinguishing between Post-Prints and the final Publishers' Version.

I prefer the APA style which contains the DOI which - in the end - can be used to track the digital footprint of the article (incl. citations etc):

Author, A.A.  (year).  Title of article.  Title of Periodical.  Advance online publication.  doi: xx.xxxxxxxxxx

Example:

Muldoon, K., Towse, J., Simms, V., Perra, O., & Menzies, V. (2012). A longitudinal analysis of estimation, counting skills, and mathematical ability across the first school year. Developmental Psychology. Advance online publication. doi:10.1037/a0028240

The researcher can also consult the web page for the journal - see Author Guidelines. It might be that the journal prescribes how post-prints should be cited.
