Dr John Kirkland opened the 2015 Publishers for Development conference by
setting the scene through highlighting key trends in higher education and
research. *He spoke of the rapid expansion of HE globally and the
increasing presence of developing-country researchers in international
research communities. He discussed some of the challenges ahead, and the
achievements thus far.*
