Dear Colleagues

On 19 June our LIASA President, Ms Ujala Satgoor, announced that Open Access Week, celebrated internationally from 20-26 October 2014, has been adopted as an official LIASA project from this year onwards.

We would like to invite all fellow librarians (public, special, school, research etc.) to join us (LIASA HELIG), and to enrol for an introductory course on Open Access. This course will be presented online and free of charge from 3 September until 12 December 2014. The presenters include experts from all over the field, and on completion students will receive a statement of accomplishment from the Stanford University. There are no prerequisites required, and you do not need to currently work in Open Access to attend this course. To enrol, go to https://class.stanford.edu/courses/Education/OpenKnowledge/Fall2014/about and click on Register for OpenKnowledge. Please try to enrol as soon possible to secure a spot.

Should you decide to enrol, please let me (ismith at sun.ac.za<mailto:ismith at sun.ac.za>) or Ingrid Thomson (ingrid.thomson at uct.ac.za<mailto:ingrid.thomson at uct.ac.za><mailto:Ingrid.thomson at uct.ac.za>) know so that we can add you to our local South African support list, which will be created for the purpose of this workshop. Through this list we will be able to support one another, help find articles, and help answer questions on a local level so that in the end, we have a 100% completion rate! You will not be on your own, Please note – there are no exams involved at all.

Given Open Access, Open Scholarship, Open Data, Open Science, Open Humanities, Open Education etc. gaining more momentum in the library and research environment each day, this would be the perfect opportunity for SA librarians to come to grips with these developments. Especially in the light of restructuring within libraries and new skills required to continue to remain relevant.

Looking forward to have all on board! The future is Open!

Kind regards
Ina

LIASA HELIG Chair-elect (on behalf of LIASA HELIG)
