[Irtalk] Webometrics ranking for repositories

The distinction was also made on the previous Webometrics web interface.

I asked Bram Luyten from @mire<http://atmire.com/website/> about the difference, and following response:

“I can't point you to the concrete details in writing, that there are two kinds of repositories:
- Institutional repositories would only have content created/stewarded by a specific institution
- Portals who gather & group content from multiple institutions & organizations, like iRevues http://documents.irevues.inist.fr/

==> It was my impression that the "Top Repositories" ranking is just the portals + IRs all rolled into one ranking.

Because portals have a lot more content, they generally rank higher in the top repositories compared to an IR from a single institution.”

Hi All,

I noticed a  discrepancy: If you compare the rankings in "Top Institutionals" vs (Africa/Sub Saharan Africa/ South Africa) UP ETD is ranken at 51 (67); Stell 141 (157); Unisa 146 (165); CSIR 161 (190); UJ 210 (237). As we all look better in the "Top Institutionals" why refer to the more specific? Did any of you pick up the reason for this? This is raising concern about the reliability of Webometric but please correct me/point me in the right direction if I'm missing something obvious.

Webometrics has changed their web interface, and it seems as if they also did some work work on the rankings. See http://repositories.webometrics.info/ An improvement I think.
