16th International Symposium on Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Hong Kong, 23-26 September, 2013

The University of Hong Kong Libraries, in conjunction with the Hong Kong
Public Libraries of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of the
Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China, is
pleased to announce it is the host for ETD 2013 - the 16th International
Symposium on Electronic Theses and Dissertations.
Under the auspices of the Networked Digital Library of Theses and
Dissertations (NDLTD), an international organization that promotes the
adoption, creation, use, dissemination and preservation of electronic theses
and dissertations (ETDs), the annual symposium, which usually attracts over
200 delegates, will be held in Asia for the very first time. The NDLTD
encourages and supports the efforts of institutes of higher education and
their communities to develop electronic publishing and digital libraries,
thus enabling them to share knowledge more effectively in order to unlock
the potential benefits worldwide. "The extensive development and innovation
in Hong Kong libraries in these fields makes it most fitting that Hong Kong
be the first Asian host of this prestigious event," commented Peter E
Sidorko, University Librarian and Symposium Chair. "It is especially
fitting that this event is hosted by The University of Hong Kong Libraries"
continues Sidorko, "as it was the first academic library in Asia to digitize
all of its theses". These theses now reside within the University's
institutional repository, The Scholars Hub (http://hub.hku.hk/).
With the theme Asian Values, Western Thought, World Treasure, the event will
serve as an opportunity to showcase a range of developments from Asia and
beyond in the various topics covered by the symposium which include digital
preservation, copyright / intellectual property, institutional repositories,
ETD policies and programs, IT in ETD and institutional repositories, digital
libraries and IT National and international collaboration, data curation and
others.
In July 2012, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) rated Hong Kong the
world's most liveable city. Not always recognised for its amount of green
space, Hong Kong enjoys much natural beauty. It is also, of course,
culturally rich. A place where east meets west. A place of towering
skyscrapers, of opulent dining options as well as local street food in
abundance, one of the best transportation systems in the world, of local
markets and five star shopping, kung fu movies, the Star Ferry, dim sum and
the home of one country, two systems. Hong Kong is also an ideal jumping
point for visits to mainland China as well as the rest of Asia.
The University of Hong Kong (or HKU, as it is familiarly known to students,
staff and alumni) is the oldest tertiary education institution in Hong Kong,
officially opening on March 11, 1912. It is also regularly rated as the
number one University in Asia, and among the top universities in the world.
The University of Hong Kong Libraries (HKUL) enjoys a global reputation for
digital innovation, extensive digital and print collections (including 3
million print volumes plus 3 million e-books) as well as quality support
services.
>From 23 to 26 September, 2013, the main symposium will be held at the Hong
Kong Central Library auditorium in Causeway Bay with additional events held
at the University of Hong Kong, both conveniently located on Hong Kong
Island. Further information can be found at http://lib.hku.hk/etd2013/.
