He is a virologist and immunologist by training and has conducted research at a number of leading institutions such as the National Institute for Medical Research (London) and the National Institutes of Health (Maryland USA). He is the author of over 200 scientific publications focusing on influenza, measles and chicken pox. He founded Enabling Open Scholarship (EOS) and is its current president. EOS is an international association whose purpose is to persuade the world’s rectors, vice-chancellors and university presidents of the benefits of OA, and to tutor them in how best to achieve it.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='text-align:justify'><span style='font-size:12.0pt'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='text-align:justify'><span style='font-size:12.0pt'>Prof. Bernard Rentier is described by OA guru Stevan Harnad as is the first rector to fully grasp and fully act upon OA. The OA mandate instituted at Liège (Immediate Deposit/Optional Access, linked to performance evaluation) is considered to be an excellent exemplar not just for Europe but worldwide.
