Dear Colleagues

As announced previously, this is the first year
that LIASA will be officially supporting International Open Access (OA)
Week. We have started off with a big bang by having 60 librarians from
all sectors enrolled for the Stanford Open Access/Open Knowledge online
course! We were pleasantly surprised by the interest shown, and wish all
the best of luck! Course information is available at https://class.stanford.edu/courses/Education/OpenKnowledge/Fall2014/about (registration required).

But why is it so important that we have as many librarians possible on board? The objectives - in brief:

- Open Access should be part of every librarians’ role.
Librarianship is about making sure all our users will always have
access to quality information, without any barriers.
- By having you all on board it helps to create a pool of expertise on Open Access. Open Access is not some holy grail which only a selected few can work on. Everybody can be on board!
- This course offers the ideal setting
to further your knowledge on OA. It is self-paced, and you can decide
to spend as much time you want on it (at least 1 hour a week, but no
more than 8 hours a week required). You do not even have to leave your
home or office. Remember – OA applies to all kinds of libraries.
- Through joining this course we get to experience online, self-paced learning hands-on.
Once we know how it works, we can also investigate for implementation
in our own libraries, maybe doing online training in different areas, or
even create opportunities for people from all areas of work to further
their careers.
- Online learning can be a somewhat lonely process. For that reason we have started an OA support group mailing list.
Through this list we will be able to exchange ideas, motivate one
another, and work towards a common goal. Join today! E-mail: ingrid.thomson@uct.ac.za or ismith@sun.ac.za

Have you planned any activities for OA Week at your library yet?

Please join the international and SA OA Week community.
This page also contains many activities and ideas for use in all kinds
of libraries. Also share what you will be doing as part of the SA
Community group.
