On behalf of the LIASA Executive Committee, it gives me great pleasure to announce that – during the LIASA Representative Council Meeting held on 27 April 2014 – <b>Open Access Week</b> was adopted as a third LIASA project to be supported by our Association,
in addition to two existing projects, namely South African Library Week (15 – 22 March 2014) and the LIASA Annual Conference (22 – 26 September 2014). LIASA was one of the first South African signatories to the Berlin Declaration on Open Access (<a href="http://openaccess.mpg.de/286432/Berlin-Declaration" target="_blank" style="font-size:14px">http://openaccess.mpg.de/286432/Berlin-Declaration</a>) <span style="font-size:11pt">and
subsequent to this, the LIASA official journal, South African Journal of Libraries and Information Science (SAJLIS) is now published as an Open Access journal (</span><a href="http://sajlis.journals.ac.za/pub" target="_blank" style="font-size:14px">http://sajlis.journals.ac.za/pub</a><span style="font-size:11pt">)</span></p>

Open Access Week, a global event now entering its seventh year, is an opportunity for the public, academic and research communities to continue to learn about the potential benefits of Open Access, to share what they’ve learned with others, and to help inspire
wider participation in helping to make Open Access a new norm in teaching, learning and research. Different library sectors can get involved in different ways, for example:</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="font-size:11pt; color:rgb(34,34,34); margin:0cm 0cm 0pt; background-color:rgb(255,255,255)">
</p>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size:15px; font-family:Calibri,sans-serif; font-weight:normal; color:rgb(34,34,34); font-style:normal; text-decoration:none"><b>Public libraries:</b> Create an awareness of Open Access, provide Open Access to full text online content,
and help push to make publicly funded research openly accessible for all. Remember – all members of your community will in the end also benefit from results made publicly available, e.g. solutions to address medical conditions, learners requiring access to
trusted information, and many more. Professionals not affiliated with a large institution should be able to access research free of charge, e.g. a health practitioner, a consultant etc.</span>
</li><li><span style="font-size:15px; font-family:Calibri,sans-serif; font-weight:normal; color:rgb(34,34,34); font-style:normal; text-decoration:none"><b>School libraries:</b> Open textbooks – part of the broader open educational resources movement – are made available
online to be freely used by learners, teachers and members of the community. Use these textbooks to address access and affordability concerns, and to complement existing learning material. Teachers should also be encouraged to share learning and teaching material
in an open format so that the less fortunate can benefit.</span> </li><li><b style="font-size:11pt; color:rgb(34,34,34)">Special, Research and Academic Libraries:</b><span style="font-size:11pt; color:rgb(34,34,34)"> </span><span style="font-size:11pt; color:rgb(34,34,34)">In addition to providing free of charge access to valuable

Join the Open Access Week international initiative at <a href="http://www.openaccessweek.org/" target="_blank" style="color:rgb(17,85,204)">http://www.openaccessweek.org/</a> This page also offers lots of ideas for activities and events that can be hosted at
your library. Share what you plan to do on this page, as well as on the various LIASA facebook pages. The Chairs of the various interest groups will help coordinate activities within the various branches, and we would like to encourage you to get in touch
well in advance.</p>
