<DIV>ETD2011 is the latest in a series of international conferences of the <BR>Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDLTD). The <BR>expected audience will include advocates, practitioners, researchers and <BR>students working in the area of electronic theses and dissertations and, <BR>more broadly, open access and digital repositories. The conference is <BR>hosted in South Africa by the SA National Research Foundation, <BR>University of Cape Town and Stellenbosch University. ETD2011 will <BR>provide local and international attendees with the opportunity to <BR>exchange ideas and enrich their respective programmes, bridging the <BR>infamous north-south divide.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>The theme of ETD2011 is: "From Islands to Global Interconnectedness", in <BR>the spirit of the African philosophical notion that we are who we are <BR>because of others. Open Access repositories, and ETD programmes in <BR>particular, have reached a stage of widespread acceptance around the <BR>world. Many attendees will come from institutions where ETD programmes <BR>already exist or are imminent. It is therefore appropriate that we now <BR>look to the development of relationships among institutions to, firstly, <BR>support one another at the level of policy and advocacy, secondly, <BR>provide users with services that span institutional and regional <BR>boundaries and, lastly, address global problems such as preservation by <BR>means of collaboration.</DIV>

<DIV>The conference programme will include technical paper sessions, plenary <BR>keynote addresses, poster presentations, panels, tutorials and workshops <BR>-- to cater for a broad audience of participants.</DIV>

<DIV>Submissions are encouraged in, but not restricted to, the following areas:<BR>- dataset curation<BR>- digital libraries<BR>- digital/institutional repositories<BR>- digitization<BR>- graduate education<BR>- intellectual property, copyright and publishing<BR>- interoperability and union collections<BR>- metadata standards<BR>- multimedia ETDs<BR>- non-traditional theses, such as creative works<BR>- national/regional collaborations<BR>- policies for ETD programmes<BR>- preservation<BR>- privacy<BR>- production of ETDs<BR>- statistics and reporting<BR>- workflows and processes</DIV>

<DIV>For papers, posters and workshop and panel proposals, submit an abstract <BR>of up to 500 words in a PDF or plain text document. Clearly indicate <BR>the authors, title and format (paper/poster/panel/workshop). For papers <BR>and posters, ensure that you outline the aims/objectives, methods, <BR>results and conclusions in your abstract. For workshops and panels, <BR>indicate the aims/objectives, programme and intended audience.</DIV>

<DIV>All papers will be presented in the main sessions of the conference.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>All authors of accepted paper abstracts will be invited to submit full <BR>papers for peer-review prior to publication. This is optional. If a <BR>paper passes the peer-review, it may be published as a "peer-reviewed" <BR>paper; if a paper does not pass the peer-review, it may be published as <BR>a "regular" paper. Authors who choose not to submit their papers for <BR>peer-review may have their papers published as "regular" papers in the <BR>proceedings.</DIV>

<DIV>Accepted posters will be viewable in dedicated poster sessions and will <BR>be on display throughout the conference. Posters will also be archived <BR>electronically.</DIV>

<DIV>Workshops will be held after the main conference to explore specialised <BR>topics in detail and may be focused on any aspect of significant <BR>interest to the community. Proposers of successful workshops will be <BR>responsible for the content of those workshops.</DIV>

<DIV>Panels will be interspersed with the paper sessions. Proposers of <BR>successful panels will be responsible for the content/speakers of those <BR>panels.</DIV>
