[IRTalk] NISO Approves Working Group to Develop Recommended Practice for Identification of Trust Markers for Increasing Credibility and Trust in Research

In May 2026, the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) approved the creation of a Trust Markers Working Group to develop a recommended practice for identifying and communicating signals that help readers assess the credibility and trustworthiness of scholarly research. The initiative responds to growing concerns about research misconduct, fraudulent submissions, retractions and inconsistent research-integrity checks across journals and preprint platforms. Because publishers often do not clearly disclose the checks they perform, readers - including researchers, journalists, policymakers and the public -may struggle to judge the reliability of scholarly content. The Working Group will therefore develop common definitions and a framework for transparent “trust markers” that can indicate what quality, integrity and verification processes have been applied to a publication, drawing on expertise from publishing, research integrity, scholarly communication, libraries, metadata and identifiers.
