The initiative responds to growing concerns about research misconduct, fraudulent submissions, retractions and inconsistent research-integrity checks across journals and preprint platforms. Because publishers often do not clearly disclose the checks they perform, readers - including researchers, journalists, policymakers and the public -may struggle to judge the reliability of scholarly content. The Working Group will therefore develop common definitions and a framework for transparent “trust markers” that can indicate what quality, integrity and verification processes have been applied to a publication, drawing on expertise from publishing, research integrity, scholarly communication, libraries, metadata and identifiers.
