Dear Dr Liggins
We understand that awards do not only acknowledge success; they also recognize many other qualities, such as ability, struggle, effort, internal motivation, but above all – excellence. On behalf of the community within which we work here in Africa (pilot African Open Science Platform), congratulations on receiving this well-deserved award, and may the excellent work you do go from strength to strength!
Kind regards
Ina Smith

Subject: Call for Co-sponsors of Future Data Stewardship Awards
Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf)
Dear Ina Smith,
We are extremely pleased to announce that Dr Libby Liggins<https://www.icsu-wds.org/news/news-archive/libby-liggins-wins-2019-wds-data-stewardship-award> was chosen by the WDS Scientific Committee (WDS-SC) as the 2019 winner of the WDS Data Stewardship Award<https://www.icsu-wds.org/community/data-stewardship-award>. We hope you will join us in congratulating Libby on winning the Award, which will be presented with a prize at International Data Week 2021.
The 2019 Award is the seventh to be presented to an Early Career Researcher (ECR) who has exceptionally contributed to the improvement of scientific data stewardship through their engagement with the community, academic achievements, and innovations. Since it was first created in 2013, the WDS Data Stewardship Award has been very well-received by the community, and over time has become progressively popular and its significance recognized in highlighting the next generations of data custodians.
Nominations for the Award continue to increase in both quantity and quality. In 2019, the number of nominees almost doubled from that in 2018, and many were outstanding such that selecting the winner was by no means an easy task for the WDS-SC! We expect that the popularity of the Award will only grow further as the importance of long-term data preservation becomes ever more acknowledged by the scientific community.
The WDS-SC would like to invite interested organizations to co-sponsor future Data Stewardship Awards alongside the World Data System, and thus help support this valuable activity. The exact terms of such co-sponsorship can be discussed, but if it is potentially attractive to Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) or you believe it might be for another organization you are associated with, then please email the WDS International Programme Office for further details (ipo at icsu-wds.org<mailto:ipo at icsu-wds.org>). We look forward to hearing from you.
Many thanks,
Rorie
