For your geodata visualisation research and education needs, there is lot of work done by GeoForAll colleagues that might be useful . One example is the FOSS4G GeoAcademy Curriculum lectures and labs . These are maintained and made available for download from the Spatial {Query} Lab on behalf of the GeoAcademy<https://foss4geo.wordpress.com/>. The lectures focus on a vendor-agnostic set of theories and principles.

These lectures and labs are freely available for you to use and are released under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported license<http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/>. The lectures and labs are aligned to the Geospatial Technology Competency Model<http://www.careeronestop.org/COMPETENCYMODEL/competency-models/geospatial-technology.aspx> and all labs focus on the use of Free and Open Source GIS Software (FOSS4G). All of the labs are also available on GitHub<https://github.com/FOSS4GAcademy>.

The following courses are available

GST 101 - Introduction to Geospatial Technology (QGIS)<http://spatialquerylab.com/gst-101-introduction-to-geospatial-technology/>

GST 102 - Spatial Analysis (QGIS)<http://spatialquerylab.com/foss4g-academy-curriculum/gst-102-spatial-analysis/>

GST 103 - Data Acquisition and Management (QGIS)<http://spatialquerylab.com/foss4g-academy-curriculum/gst-103-data-acquisition-and-management/>
