The European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) is officially launched today, 23 November 2018, during an event hosted by the Austrian Presidency of the European Union. The inauguration marks the conclusion of a long process of consultation and reflection with stakeholders led by the European Commission. The event demonstrates the importance of EOSC for the advancement of research in Europe and introduces the new EOSC Portal<http://www.eosc-portal.eu/>.
The EOSC Portal<https://eosc-portal.eu/> provides access to data, services and resources. It is a source of up-to-date information about the EOSC initiative, including best practices, governance and user stories. All service providers, research communities and other entities with a stake in EOSC are invited to visit the EOSC Portal and explore how they can benefit from its functionalities.
The launch event features live demonstrations to showcase how researchers can interact with and benefit from the functionalities of the portal. The demonstrators, presented live and at the demo booth, cover a wide range of disciplines and user scenarios to show the many different user journeys through the portal.
The scientific demonstrations are complemented with the presentation of the newly appointed EOSC Executive Board.
EOSC-hub <https://www.eosc-hub.eu/> is a lead contributor to the development of the EOSC Portal<https://eosc-portal.eu/> and its components, in particular the information website<https://eosc-hub.eu/news/eosc-portal.eu> and the EOSC Marketplace.
EOSC-hub services also support many of the demos featured during the launch, for example:
* The CLARIN demonstrator presented by Maciej Ogrodniczuk relies on EUDAT's CLARIN's VLO<https://www.eosc-hub.eu/catalogue/Component%20MetaData%20Infrastructure>.
* The WeNMR suite for structural biology<https://www.eosc-hub.eu/catalogue/WeNMR%20suite%20for%20Structural%20Biology> is a EOSC-hub thematic service and is the focus of one of the launch demos.
* The sustainable development goals demo uses EGI Cloud Compute<https://www.eosc-hub.eu/catalogue/EGI%20Cloud%20Compute> for computing resources.
* The PROMINENCE demonstrator relies on INDIGO-DataCloud<https://www.indigo-datacloud.eu/> Infrastructure Manager, EGI Cloud Compute<https://www.eosc-hub.eu/catalogue/EGI%20Cloud%20Compute>.
