Introduction
In delivering 'social science that makes a difference' the Research Programmes, Units, Institutes and Centres of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) undertake policy-oriented research from its offices in Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban, Pietermaritzburg, and Port Elizabeth. Our public purpose mandate is set out in the Human Sciences Research Council Act of 2008.
The eResearch Knowledge Centre (eRKC) intends to enhance the HSRC's research capability through innovative information services, geospatial solutions and digital curation. It is an informed research enabler that provides innovative knowledge services and access to resources that meet the needs of the HSRC's research community and its stakeholders. Since data and outputs are fundamental to the HSRC's research endeavour, dedicated capacity is required to ensure that the HSRC's data and outputs are described according to best practice standards, preserved and available for use. The HSRC wishes to appoint a suitable candidate on a five year contract as a Digital Curation Manager at the Pretoria office.

*Train and assist staff in research units to
manage research data according to best practices that supports the preservation and dissemination of data;
publish research outputs in line with the publishing mandate of the HSRC, including routes to open access and adherence to publisher policies.
*Curate deposited data and related documentation by
validating and checking deposited data and documentation;
reviewing and completing structured metadata and compiling user guides to describe datasets and facilitate re-use;
preparing preservation and dissemination files;
*Curate deposited research outputs by describing and making these available for use.
*Manage the use of curated data and research outputs by
managing requests and enquiries;
promoting the use of curated data sets and research outputs;
training users to access curated data and -outputs;
preparing reports on the curated data and -outputs and the use thereof.
*Manage the curation process by
reviewing Data Management Plans;
developing Standard Operating Procedures;
managing curation projects;
supervising the curation work of staff in the unit;
doing quality assurance on data, as well as data and research output curation practices;
managing organisational performance information pertaining to research data and outputs
*Represent the Digital Curation unit, the eRKC and the HSRC at internal and external forums, by
participating in the development of the IT infrastructure that supports curation;
building capacity in the wider curation community;
participating in local and international conferences to the benefit of the HSRC.
Requirements
*A post-graduate qualification or a four year graduate qualification and studying towards a post-graduate qualification in the social or information sciences;
*Do you have at least 7 years' experience in a data management / research output management environment?
*Working knowledge of statistical software such as SPSS, Stata and SAS for curation purposes (checking and enhancing quantitative data sets) and high proficiency in MS Office;
*Knowledge of research methodology and research data (quantitative and / or qualitative) in the Social Sciences;
*Knowledge of metadata and archiving practices, as well as knowledge of international best practice and trends in the area of data and outputs curation;
*Problem solving skills and the ability to search for and implement solutions;
*Good interpersonal skills and a strong service orientation which will contribute to cooperative and effective interaction with colleagues;
*Good planning, organising, writing and presentation skills;
*Willingness to work under pressure, according to plan, so as to meet deadlines.
The level of appointment will depend on qualifications, experience and recent performance. All shortlisted applicants will be required to undertake a written competency exercise for this position. The HSRC offers attractive, market-related salaries, depending on qualifications, experience and recent performance.
