It is also important for individuals, SA and African institutions to understand collaborations with one another, and the global world of research. What is the level of contribution? What is the return-on-investment? The more open research, the more opportunity there is for collaboration.

Cloud-based technologies provide easier access to the infrastructure and tools needed for research collaboration. The use of these tools can also provide new insights into current collaboration patterns; a picture of what is happening right now rather than what has happened in the past.
