Subject: [IRTalk] Science becoming increasingly data driven

Science is becoming increasingly data driven, and roles, responsibilities, skills dynamic. Constant adaptation needed, and the only wat to stay abreast lifelong self-learning.

Suggestions to develop and apply in work environment:

- Enroll for one of the following free open access courses, all related to research and science: Author Carpentry<https://authorcarpentry.github.io/> -- Data Carpentry<http://www.datacarpentry.org/> -- Software Carpentry<https://software-carpentry.org/> -- Doing journalism for data<http://datajournalismcourse.net/>

- Reports becoming more data driven and dynamic. Examples of data driven documents and data visualisations - click on any of the hexagon images: https://d3js.org/ and also see http://flowingdata.com/ This is very much linked to "translate" challenging research outcomes so that the ordinary man on the street (tax payers supporting funding for research) can also benefit and understand and feel empowered (citizen scientists).

- Sharing the datasets along with the open access reports in a trusted open access repository. In Africa a concerning low number of data repositories ..... See the blue areas .... http://www.re3data.org/browse/by-country/

- Learn to program with R, Github, ggplot2, and more. Many, many excellent free online courses available.

- Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence: Show MITs AI a picture of a meal and it will tell you how to cook it.<http://www.zdnet.com/article/show-mits-ai-an-image-of-a-meal-and-it-will-tell-you-how-to-cook-it/> This also used for cancer detection and more.

- See article: How AI fits into your data science team.<https://hbr.org/cover-story/2017/07/the-business-of-artificial-intelligenc>

- New jobs are being created in science, and existing jobs challenged/overlap. Data to become part of each and every job.

Things are moving quite fast, and according to research we need much, much more data to inform new trends, find solutions to problems.

Kind regards
Ina
