[IRTalk] Capacity Building in Open Science/Open Data at the University of Abomey-Calavi (Benin)

More and more universities are offering courses on open science/open data. Often it is as part of a broader discipline, or computer science. Please share if you know of any more universities offering related courses on the continent, so we can create more awareness and add to the AOSP web page. Thank you.

“The University of Abomey-Calavi (Benin), Faculty of Agricultural Sciences<http://jrsbiodiversity.org/grants/faculte-des-sciences-agronomiques-uac/> offers a Masters Program in Biodiversity Informatics. This program is in its first year, and 22 students (see photo below) registered. It has already proof to be a huge success, and is currently the Masters Program with the most interest within this Faculty. Indications are that many more students can be expected to enroll in future. The courses are bilingual, and taught in English and French by native speakers of the languages. There is a huge need for experts to teach open science/open data at the university. Please get in touch with Prof Ganglo.
Students from all African countries are invited to enroll and to become champions of biodiversity data mobilization and data use in their countries. This will enable them to contribute to inform decisions on natural resource conservation and sustainable use in their countries and in Africa as a whole. This will also help overcome the big challenge of insufficient data mobilization and data use in Africa.”

The Bachelor of Science in Data Science degree has a strong mathematics core and a focuses on data science and applications thereof. The degree is designed to develop highly skilled graduates in areas in which there are considerable shortages across the country. Graduates in possession of this degree will be both employable and eligible for further study, whether in honours or postgraduate diploma studies.
