An update on the status of SA Open Access scholarly journals in SA, as recorded in the DOAJ.

Dear Editors of SA Open Access Journals

Thank you to all who have applied for scholarly journals to be included in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ)<https://doaj.org/>. We hope for this list to become one of the first starting points when authors look for an open access journal to publish in, or for readers to find information in, or for funders to provide funding for research published in scholarly journals.

Following investigation, we found that only 68 South African scholarly journals are currently in the DOAJ system, at various stages. 36 of the 68 have already been approved and listed. This is a small portion compared to the 154 SA scholarly journal titles that are available as Open Access. A journal is regarded as Open Access when the full text can be accessed without having to pay or to register, with the articles submitted peer-reviewed before publication. There are also many other criteria these journals need to adhere to before being included.

Below the list of journals already included in the DOAJ. You are most welcome to continue to apply for inclusion<https://doaj.org/application/new> if you haven't done so yet. Contact us anytime should you need assistance with the process.
