The KU authors criticize this expression of the Gold OA model, arguing that
APCs disadvantage scholars in the developing world and at less well-funded
institutions, as well as early career researchers. *The KU authors argue
for a Platinum OA model, where external subsidies cover publication costs,
making the scholarship open and accessible; that is, free to readers and
free to authors alike*. Though published in Science—a toll access
journal—the letter is also available through KU’s open digital repository,
KU ScholarWorks.
