EIFL and IDS webinar on DSpace repositories

Join our free EIFL and IDS webinar on DSpace repositories on Wednesday, 20 January, at 10:00 GMT to learn more on how to check whether your DSpace repository has been set up according to the current best practice and how to make adjustments if needed: upgrades, standardization of the installation and customization.

Nason Bimbe (IDS, http://www.ids.ac.uk), Hilton Gibson (Stellenbosch University) and Andrew Mwesigwa (Makerere University) will share experiences from their joint activities to assist the Makerere University Library (http://mulib.mak.ac.ug) to effectively manage the digitisation projects and to maintain their own DSpace repository that is used to disseminate the university?s intellectual outputs.

And Africa Bwamkuu (African Digital Libraries Support Network, ADLSN) will talk about hosting digital libraries on the cloud: a case study of adlc.info<http://adlc.info> - platform for digital repositories.

Best practices for running sustainable institutional repositories will be discussed as well as DSpace repository operations optimisation, taking into account the experience gained from managing the following:

- Makerere University Institutional Repository http://makir.mak.ac.ug

- SUNScholar : Stellenbosch University Institutional Repository http://scholar.sun.ac.za

- SUNDigital Collections http://digital.lib.sun.ac.za

- University of Namibia Library - UNAM Scholarly Repository http://repository.unam.na

- IDS OpenDocs: http://opendocs.ids.ac.uk/opendocs

The webinar will have two parts. The first part will address the following topics:

- Systems work: how to standardise the DSpace repository installation according to best systems practice for Unix/Linux servers, e.g. checking operational installation location, etc;

- How to manage DSpace upgrades and other operational customisations in line with the normal installation of DSpace and those needed for the upgrade of DSpace;

- Ensuring daily repository maintenance: how to institute a system of daily backups and daily automatic maintenance; setting up policies for disaster recovering;

- How to set up the digital object identifier handle server, the OAI-PMH remote harvester interface and the SWORD remote deposit service;

- High-level discussion of other DSpace interoperability facilities such as RSS, REST-API, RDF, DOI and ORCID;

- Operational customisations: how to institute a simple academic submission; amend the default license for submission; set up custom index; how to update the XMLUI front page news file, etc;

- How to enable the use of Google analytics;

- How to enable the Mirage2 theme;

- Community/collection hierarchies management;

- The need for open access self archiving policy and repository preservation plan; and

- Hosting digital repositories in the cloud.

The second part of the webinar will be devoted to answering your questions about DSpace upgrades, standardisation of the installation and customization.
