Invitation to attend the IFLA 2015 Satellite meeting, Stellenbosch, South Africa

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SECTION

Theme: Transforming libraries with open digital technologies
Date: 13-14 August 2015
Venue: Stellenbosch University, South Africa.

This is a further call for participants to register and attend the 2015 IT Section satellite meeting that this year will be held in the oak-lined university town of Stellenbosch (50 kilometres from Cape Town). In keeping with the main conference theme ("Dynamic Libraries: Access, Development and Transformation") the 2015 satellite meeting focusses on how library transformation is facilitated by the development of open technologies, which in turn enables open access to information and explicit knowledge structures.

Transforming libraries with open digital technologies:
The library of today is made up of different digital components to create an environment which enables users to engage with information in a meaningful way. Most of these digital components are based on open systems and standards, without the information consumer ever realising it. The debate has largely moved beyond the question of whether open technologies versus proprietary systems are the preferred solution for libraries, to the decisions on when and how to implement systems based on open standards. Even so, efforts need to be stepped up to fully exploit open digital technologies in education and training systems to assist librarians to acquire new skills for a digital world.

Highlights of the programme:
The meeting presents an opportunity for libraries to experience current developments in open technologies for big data, library management systems, digital libraries, and journal publication management systems to mention a few.

Day one - workshops on:

*         Big Data for libraries

* Installing and updating the DSpace digital repository system

* Methods and tools for researching digital libraries

* e-Journal management systems for libraries

Day two includes presentations by delegates from Australia, Singapore, USA, Uganda, Nigeria, India and South Africa:

* Project success metrics for implementing open source solutions

* The synergy between librarian and software developer

* The value proposition for libraries as publishers

* Case studies of open source projects in libraries

All delegates are also invited to a post-workshop sponsored dinner on day 1 in the heart of the picturesque Stellenbosch wine lands.
