This paper considers the origin, definition, rationale and modus operandi
of open access. It discusses issues that are fundamental to open access
using the Budapest Open Access Initiative as a reference point. It also
discusses the relevance of open access in Africa focusing on the green road
to open access and *concludes with recommendations for the successful
implementation of open access via the green road.*
