[Irtalk] Beyond citations.... social impact?

I wonder if it's only information specialists (like us) who are interested in measuring uptake of research in the social sphere?
 
Societal impact  or social media impact?  What is the focal interest here?

Are we hoping that researcher  themselves will get caught up in the power of social media for their work so that this builds the possibilities for changing the research assessment criteria for impact? 
 
It seems recognition is the only driving interest..... not societal impact
