Over the past few years, scholarly publishing has undergone dramatic
change. Several recent projects have examined various elements of change
within scholarly publishing, yet none have focused specifically on
publishing in Africa. This research project is designed to gather both
quantitative and qualitative data to develop a comprehensive picture of the
scholarly publishing environment in Africa – the barriers, critical success
factors, and current trends in dissemination and business models. Research
will be conducted in two phases. The first phase of research will be in the
form of a survey to elicit a mix of quantitative and qualitative responses
from African-based journal editors and publishers. A second phase of the
project will occur in September/October. For this phase, we will select
10-15 respondents from Phase 1 for Skype interviews to further expand on
their answers and explore current issues in scholarly publishing.
