If the library as ‘gateway’ to content has been eroded with the emergence
of the web, so the role of the library as ‘buyer’ of materials under
traditional regimes may also be under threat with the development of new
content models. However, the obverse of this is that there may be more room
for the library or academic institution to act as a publisher itself.
