Dear Colleagues

In national interest I would like to share the following two forms with
you.

Please feel free to adapt & distribute the attached forms
electronically to publishers. It is compliant with the SHERPA/RoMEO
guidelines and can be used for easy electronic completion. The
conditions can be copied & pasted on the form. You can either forward
this to SHERPA/RoMEO or to me for further distribution.

I also attach the form for adding new Open Access Journals to the DOAJ.

Regards
Elsabé

Subject: Copyright policies of South African publishers

Dear Lynne du Toit, CEO of Juta,

Juta is congratulated for publishing the first Open Access book in
South Africa for the African Copyright and Access to Knowledge Project
last year and the educational and library sectors look forward to more
Open Access publications from your company and other SA publishers in
due course.

Nicol Faasen, now retired from PASA, and I have been in communication
this year about copyright policies and institutional repositories. He
suggested that Juta could possibly set the ‘ball rolling’ in getting
South African publishers to record their copyright policies with regard
to Open Access institutional repositories, as they are not available
online for libraries and tertiary institutions to access locally or
internationally.

As you may know, most SA universities have institutional repositories
and their intent is to be completely copyright compliant when placing
material on their repositories. SHERPA/ROMEO website at
http://www.sherpa.ac.uk/romeo/ provides copyright policies of many
overseas publishers, and this site is extremely helpful. SHERPA has
agreed to host the policies of South African publishers on their
website, if we can coordinate submitting the information to them.

Please could you let me know how Juta can assist in this project so
that SA publishers’ policies are listed and sent to SHERPA as soon as
possible? This will also help SA publishers tremendously and reduce
admin regarding copyright requests, as anyone wanting to load a SA
publication onto an institutional repository can at least check and be
certain of the policies, instead of having to write to individual
publishers each time they want to load an article or other item on their
repositories.

A few SA publishers have already submitted their policies to Elsabe
Olivier at the University of Pretoria, who is also involved in this
project, and who is assisting with submissions to SHERPA.

Your assistance and cooperation in this matter would be much
appreciated.
Regards
Denise Nicholson
